Under the leadership of S. Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, former Union Minister, Senior Vice President and Spokesman Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and In charge Delhi Unit along with Delhi Unit Party President, Jathedar Manjit Singh G.K. National General Secretary Jathedar Avtar Singh Hit, National Vice President Jathedar Onkar Singh Thapar, Secretary General Jathedar Kuldip Singh Bhogal, National Secretary General Youth Akali Dal S. Harmit Singh Kalka, Youth Wing President S. Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Singh Khurana, Satnam Singh Aulakh, Harwinder Singh K.P., Amarjit Singh Pappu, Harmanjit Singh, Bhupinder Singh Anand, Gurminder Singh Matharu, Paramjit Singh Rana, Paramjit Singh Chandhok, Secretary-General Youth Wing Jaspreet Singh Vicky-Maan, Daljit Singh Wadali, Paramjit Singh Chimni, Amarjit Singh Bindra, Chaman Singh, Anoop Singh Ghuman, Montu Shah, Ramandeep Singh Sonu, Aamarjit Singh Tihar, Parminder Pal Singh, Jasbir Singh Jassi and thousands of party workers today held a dharna/demonstration at the residence of Smt. Sonia Gandhi, President, All India Congress Committee, 10 Janpath, New Delhi, protesting against the muddling in Sikh religious affairs by the Chief Minister of Delhi Smt. Sheila Dikshit and the Congress party. The police arrested more than 1500 persons protesting at the residence of Smt. Sonia Gandhi.
There are numerous cases where the DSGMC is under fire for resorting to corrupt practices in the use of Sikh Gurdwara funds and deals pertaining to grabbing of and usurping of Gurdwara properties. Sikhs all over the world are surprised to see why the NCT Delhi Chief Minister has all along been supporting and openly protecting the President of DSGMC even after she showed disobedience towards Sikh’s Religious Seat Sri Akal Takhat Sahib. The Supreme Court of India in its Order dated the 17th September, 2012, had directed the Delhi Government to conduct before the 31st December, 2012 the elections to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) , which were kept constantly delayed by the present Management in connivance with the Chief Minister of Delhi. The Chief Minister of Delhi, in her attempt to undo the blow from the Supreme Court’s directions to conduct elections before 31st December, 2012, has suo-moto proposed an amendment to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Act for direct election by the Sikhs to the post of DSGMC President. It is a blatant act of interference and partiality by a Congress Chief Minister in to Sikh religious affairs as well as to thwart the Supreme Court directed de. When the Mayors, the Speaker of State Assemblies, Chief Ministers Lok Sabha Speaker, Vice President, Prime Minister and the President of India all are elected by the House members, why a different system is being opted only in the case of DSGMC proposed to be elected by the Sikh voters directly. The Shiromani Akali Dal has observed and analyzed very minutely the said unfortunate events of 1980-1982-1984 which lead to fierce confrontation between the Sikhs and the Central Government of those times. Smt. Sheila Dikshit’s actions about the Sikh religious matters are clearly seen as a calculated and planned conspiracy of the Congress Party to repeat the same situation of mistrusting lost confidence. The conditions and a situation of hostility build by the Chief Minister of Delhi are sending wrong signals to the Sikhs world over. The party requested Smt. Sonia Gandhi to restrain the Government of Delhi and rein in the Chief Minister.
There is a strong need to take notice of the fact that no Sikh organization such as Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Sri Akal Takhat Sahib ji , Takhat Sri Patna Sahib ji, Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib Ji, Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib ji, no Sikh organization from any part of the world who have ever demanded direct election to DSGMC President’s post, then why the Chief Minister of Delhi has suo-moto opted for it? This action of the Chief Minister of Delhi smacks of bad designs. The party is of the belief that the action of the Delhi Chief Minister does not carry the approval of the President of the All India Congress Party. Smt. Sonia Gandhi was requested to rein in the Delhi Chief Minister and instruct her to implement the Supreme Court’s Order in its letter and spirit and conduct the elections as per the present rules and norms and to withdraw the proposed amendments accordingly.
