ULFA Delegation meets Union Home Minister; Submits its Charter of Demands

A delegation of ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom), led by its Chairman Shri Arabinda Rajkhowa met Union Home Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram and Shri Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam here today and submitted its Charter of Demands. Shri P.C. Haldar, Government of India Representative for peace talks, Shri Shankar Barua, DGP, Assam, Shri Shambhu Singh, Joint Secretary (NE), MHA and Shri Jishnu Barua , Home Commissioner of Assam were also present.

Union Home Minister and CM, Assam welcomed the initiatives of ULFA to start the peace process. Union Home Minister stated that the steps taken by the ULFA leaders for restoration of peace and normalcy in the area would yield speedier socio-economic development of the people of Assam. He stated that the concerns expressed by ULFA leaders are of concern to the State and Union Government. He assured the delegation that there is no problem which cannot be resolved with in the framework of the Constitution of the India.

The ULFA delegation also met Union Home Secretary. The delegation sought early solution to the various issues connected with the State of Assam and smooth conduct of peace dialogue on the issues raised by them. Union Home Secretary stated that dialogue will be starting very early on the demands of ULFA. He assured the delegation that peace dialogue would be closely monitored by him. It was agreed that formal Suspension of Operations (SoO) Agreement with ULFA will be signed in a meeting to be chaired by Shri Shambhu Singh, Joint Secretary (North East) in the Ministry of Home Affairs at Guwahati shortly.
