Ukraine war could flare up more
Seven months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the war remains inconclusive, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance is getting worse. He has announced the deployment of 3 lakh reserve troops in Ukraine. Since then, there have been fierce protests in Russia. In the capital Moscow, the largest industrial city of St. Petersburg, a large number of people took to the streets and demonstrated.
An independent watchdog group claimed that hundreds of people involved in rallies against the deployment of reserve troops in these two cities have been arrested. Protesters in Moscow also raised slogans of ‘No to War, Life to our Children, No Mobilization’. After Putin’s order for this military deployment, it is feared that the Ukraine war may flare up further.
A student named Vasily Fedorov, who was involved in this demonstration, said that everyone is scared. I want peace, I don’t want to shoot people with rifles. But, it is very dangerous to come out now, otherwise many more people will die. Oksana Sidorenko, a student, said that I had come to say that I am against war and mobilization of soldiers. Why are they deciding my future for me? I am scared for myself, for my brother.
Despite harsh laws against the Russian military and criticism of the war, protests took place across the country. According to the independent Russian human rights group, more than 1,300 Russians were arrested in anti-war demonstrations in 38 cities. The Russian news agency quoted the Interior Ministry as saying that police had foiled attempts to organize protests and hold rallies without permission. All demonstrations have been stopped and violators arrested.
Earlier, the anti-war movement Vesna Youth Democratic Movement had called for demonstrations. Vesna said in an appeal, referring to the Russo-Ukraine war, “We call on the soldiers to refuse to participate in the special operations of the Russian army and surrender as soon as possible. You do not need to die for Putin.” .
