A small dam being built on the outskirts of Rajkot in Gujarat has been named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother Heeraben. An official gave this information on Friday. Dilip Sakhia, president of Gir Ganga Parivar Trust, said that a small dam is being constructed by the trust at a cost of Rs 15 lakh on Nyari river near Wagudad village on Rajkot-Kalawad road.
He said that the foundation stone of the dam was laid in the presence of local MLA Darshita Shah and Rajkot Mayor Pradeep Dev.
Sakhia said that as a tribute to the Prime Minister’s mother, we have decided to name the small dam Hiraba Smriti Sarovar as it is being built in her memory. This will also inspire others to do something or donate to a good cause after the death of their loved one. Hiraba died at the age of 99 in a hospital in Ahmedabad on 30 December.
Sakhia said that this trust has built 75 small dams in the last four months with the financial help of donors. The work of this new dam will be completed within two weeks and it will have a capacity to store about 25 million liters of water. He said, “This dam will be 400 feet high and 150 feet wide. Once filled with water, it will not dry up for nine months. This will re-accumulate ground water and farmers and animal herders of nearby villages will be benefited. PLC/GT
