The sale of spurious liquor is flourishing under the patronage of police officers and state administration.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday took suo motu cognizance of media reports that several people died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Saran district. Meanwhile, it has been claimed that 60 people have died so far due to the consumption of spurious liquor.

However, a top official of Saran district said that two more people died after consuming spurious liquor in Bihar, taking the death toll to 28.

Meanwhile, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the government was hiding the total death toll in the hooch tragedy. Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly Vijay Kumar Sinha said that despite prohibition in Bihar, sale of spurious liquor is flourishing under the patronage of police officers and state administration.

But the Chief Minister is silent, he is not taking any action against the accused. The Saran incident is a mass murder by the state government and the state administration is responsible for it. PLC/GT
