The Ministry of Water Resources is now thinking in terms of an interlinking of river : Salman Khurshid

INVC,, Delhi,, The Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources met here today under the Chairmanship of Shri Salman Khurshid, Minister of Water Resources. Minister of State for Water Resources, Shri Vincent H. Pala was also present along with the Secretary and other senior officers of the Ministry. The subject for today’s discussion was the role and functions of Central Water Commission, specially with regards to implementation of Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP). The Central Water Commission gave a presentation on its functions and various aspects of AIBP and informed the Committee that till date 287 Major/Medium Irrigation Projects have been included under AIBP; of which maximum 64 are in Maharashtra followed by 33 of Andhra Pradesh. The Committee was also informed that now Central Water Commission is able to provide a warning of 48 to 72 hrs. in advance of any flood that may occur in any district so that the local administration can take precautionary measures well in time. Shri Salman Khurshid highlighted the importance of ‘water’ as a national resource and called upon all the stakeholders to think in terms of national level whenever an issue related to water is dealt with so that a holistic and integrated view can be taken. He also stated that the Ministry of Water Resources is now thinking in terms of an interlinking of river basins and not merely interlinking of rivers as interlinking of basins is a more practical and scientific approach in terms of water management. Shri Khurshid also accepted a number of suggestions put forth by the Committee Members and assured Bihar of taking up the issue of its recurring floods with Nepal when he meets his counterpart there within a week. Shri Salman Khurshid also assured the Committee that the cleaning of Yamuna river in Delhi is going on as per plans and the Government of NCT Delhi has assured him that the goal will be achieved in next two and half years. The Minister of Water Resources also instructed his Ministry to send a team of officers to Rajasthan for better appraisal of the ground situation for approving various water schemes/ projects there, especially in the Mount Abu region. Shri Khurshid also instructed the Central Water Commission to send a team of experts to Orissa to study and suggest action plan for de-silting of certain small rivers that have dried up in part.
