Mumbai . Former chief minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday demanded that the institution of governor should be abolished or there should be a proper arrangement for appointment to the important post. Thackeray said, the role of former Governor of Maharashtra (Bhagat Singh Koshyari) was despicable, as clearly came to the fore in yesterday’s (May 11) Supreme Court judgement. Thursday’s decision of the Supreme Court has also gone against the Governor of Delhi.

Thackeray said the practice of nominating political parties or workers of organizations like the RSS as governors was lowering the dignity of this important post. Thackeray said, he takes the oath of office as governor to protect and safeguard the Constitution, but that is not being done, as is evident from Thursday’s judgment of the Supreme Court in both the Maharashtra and Delhi cases.

The former chief minister said that in the past, the post of the governor of the state was given a lot of respect, but it is not so now as the office bearers (governor) are being used like some household item. Thackeray demanded, a proper system should be evolved to appoint a governor on the lines of judges, till then, I think the institution of the governor should be abolished.

Thackeray’s scathing remarks came in response to a question on the former governor, whose role and decisions during last year’s crisis toppled CM Thackeray of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Supreme Court’s decision drew scathing comments on several decisions of the then governor, though Koshyari declined to comment on the issue now.
