State Government would be considering upgradation of the Indira Gandhi Medical College as Medical University or Post Graduate Institute affiliated to the Central University to carry research and development activities in the field of medical science. This was revealed by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister on the occasion of foundation stone laying ceremony of the Obstetric and Gynecology Block in Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla to be constructed at a cost of about Rs. 20 crore here today.

Chief Minister said that the IGMC had emerged as a premier institute of medical education in the State where best of the medical services were being made available. He said that the State Government would be considering its upgradation keeping in view the increasing number of patients and requirement of medical professionals so that best of the medical education and diagnostic services were available to the people within the State and they did not had to go outside the state to avail such services.

Prof. Dhumal said that the State Government had always been considerate towards the genuine demands of its employees and had been providing them various financial and promotional benefits from time to time. He announced that all the nurses engaged under Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS) and serving in different health institutions would also be paid contractual remuneration at par with contractual nurses. He said that RKS nurses who were getting Rs. 7,500 as monthly contractual remuneration would now be eligible to get Rs. 13,500, at par with the other contractual nurses in the State.
