Piped supply of oil and domestic gas will be increased in next few years. Similarly, 25 percent of the country’s energy will be met through natural gas. This information was given at a two-day workshop on emergency response and disaster management scheme here today.
As many as 92 representatives of 32 oil and natural gas establishments are participating in the workshop organised under the aegis of Central Oil and Natural Gas Regulatory Board. The workshop was inaugurated by the Board’ Chairman Shri S. Krishnan at Hotel Noor-us-Sabah Palace.
Shri Krishnan informed that in a country like India where a large portion of population is lower and middle class, we will have to face some difficulties in these arrangements. Shri Krishnan said that keeping this in view, the Central Oil and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has been laying stress on formulating and practicing disaster management scheme.
In his welcome address, Madhya Pradesh Disaster Management Institute Chairman Shri Iqbal Singh Bains said that an institutional arrangement needs to be evolved for disaster management. Institute’s Executive Director Shri Manohar Dube said that disaster management is important not only for meeting legal requirements but also for safeguarding against increasing dangers of environmental pollution due to industries. Director Dr. Rakesh Dube threw light on the workshop’s objectives.
It is noteworthy that the Central Oil and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised the Disaster Management Institute, Bhopal for certification under emergency response and disaster management plan (E.R.D.M.P.) constituted by industries related to oil and natural gas. Rules for emergency response and disaster management plan have been framed by the Union Government. All the oil and natural gas establishments have to chalk out disaster management schemes as per these rules.
Various organisations will make presentations on issues of gas and product pipeline and distribution of domestic gas in urban areas during five technical sessions at the workshop. Guidelines for observance of law will be issued on the basis of the workshop’s conclusions.
