Urgent need to address challenges of economic weakness and political turmoil
The Summit theme – Inclusive Growth: Sustainable Solutions – captures our ‘responsibility to humanity’, and our ‘obligation to future generations’
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has said the BRICS nations bear a great responsibility, as “the choices we make now, will shape the future of not just our countries, but the world at large.” He commended the host nation of the BRICS Summit, Brazil, for the theme of the Summit – “Inclusive Growth: Sustainable Solutions”, saying it captured “our responsibility to humanity, and our obligation to future generations.”
In his opening remarks at the Sixth BRICS Summit in Fortaleza, Brazil, he called upon the member-countries of BRICS to urgently work towards addressing the challenges of global economic weakness, and political turmoil.
Recalling the beginnings of the BRICS grouping, Shri Narendra Modi said the first BRICS Summit had taken place in the middle of a global economic crisis, and BRICS was a “ray of hope” that provided an additional avenue of working for global economic recovery and stability. He said BRICS had begun as a new voice in the cause of global peace and development, and expressed happiness that BRICS is living up to that promise.
The Prime Minister thanked President Zuma for his leadership during South Africa’s Chairmanship of BRICS, and extended best wishes to Brazil, as it assumes the chair. He expressed India’s full support in taking the BRICS agenda forward.
