Surajkund Crafts Mela fast becoming a foreigner’s delight

The rich heritage of India was well reflected in the 24th Surajkund Crafts Mela as it was evident from the swelling number of foreign visitors this year. The rustic and the rural touch in its ambience had a mesmerizing effect on the platform provided to the craftspersons to display their art and craft. Craftspersons not only from India but also from abroad made their presence felt. Nonetheless, it attracted a record number of foreign tourists who were very keen to get a glimpse of our diverse culture which we proudly call it ‘Mini India’. The ambience was crafted specifically to showcase our ethnic traditions. The décor was an amalgamation of rural and urban culture where on one hand the ambience was filled with traditional frescoes while on the other there was LED screen installed in the proximity of `Choupal’, the open air stage, to display the cultural performances. This unique blend attracted not only the domestic tourists but also international ones from countries in Europe and Africa as well as the nearby Asian countries.

The popularity of the Mela could be best judged by the fact that it had already become a part of the cultural calendar kept for tourist visiting India in the various Foreign Embassies situated in Delhi. The Ambassadors along with other prominent attaches in the Embassies of large number of countries had already visited Mela.

More than 20,000 visitors from countries like Germany, Spain, Finland, France, China, Estonia, South Africa, Chile, USA, UK besides host of other countries were already seen buying best of crafts in the Mela. The Mela has now acclaimed to be the best in art, craft and folk display in the world, believed most of those who got a chance to visit the Mela this year. The visitor’s book kept at choupal was filled with encouraging comments of such patrons of art and craft. The participation of SAARC nations and countries like Egypt, Thailand and Tajikistan were exposing the Mela globally and provided a common hub for artisans from all over the world.
