Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Bholath legislator Bibi Jagir Kaur today said former Congress legislator Sukhpal Khaira was sucking up to Peoples Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal in order to find a route to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
In a statement here, Bibi Jagir Kaur said it seemed that Sukhpal Khaira has found a new master in Manpreet Badal immediately after the Punjab Congress’s debacle in the recent parliamentary polls. “Only this can describe the alacrity with which he has chosen to jump from a sinking ship and cuddle up to Manpreet Badal to gain an entry into AAP through the latter’s contacts, including Sangrur mp Bhagwant Mann”.
The Bholath legislator said it was amazing that the former Congress spokesperson had now taken on the mantle of spokesperson for Manpreet Badal and had even taken up the responsibility of explaining the PPP chief’s defeat at the hands of SAD candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal from Bathinda. She said it was surprising that the Congress mla had even come up with a pie chart to explain Manpreet Badal’s vote share but conveniently ignored the statistics that explained the true picture.
The mla said it was an undisputed fact that in 2012 the combined vote share of the Congress and the Sanjha Morcha including the PPP, CPI and SAD (Longowal) was 6.10 lakh. “It is also a fact that the same front has within a gap of two years slumped to a vote share of 4.94 lakh that is the number of votes polled by Manpreet”. She said in direct contrast SAD candidate Harsimrat Badal had increased her vote share by more than one lakh votes in the current election to wrest victory by a margin of around 20,000 votes against Manpreet.
Bibi Jagir Kaur said even if the statistics of the 2009 elections were taken into consideration, it was a fact that then Congress candidate Raninder Singh got four lakh votes. “Another 30,000 odd votes were polled by the left parties”, she said adding this meant that Manpreet had been able to get only 50,000 votes on his own steam in the current parliamentary elections.
Urging Sukhpal Khaira to face reality, the Bholath mla said Khaira was trying to play opportunistic politics but he would not succeed. “He has been unmasked in Bholath where the people have rejected him. “Even in the current parliamentary poll he has lost from his assembly segment by around 10,000 votes. He has nowhere to go and that is why he is now trying to curry favour with Manpreet”, she added.
