Bodh Gaya : Pitru Visarjan Amavasya, revered in Hinduism as Sarvapitri Amavasya, Pitru Moksha Amavasya, or simply Pitru Amavasya, stands as a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring our ancestors, known as ‘pitrs’. Depending on the regional calendar, this observance varies. For those following the Amavasyant calendar in South India, it’s marked on the Bhadrapada month’s Amavasya. Conversely, in North India, where the Purnimanta calendar is prevalent, it’s celebrated during the Ashwin month, typically falling within September-October of the Gregorian calendar.

Mahalaya Amavasya: The Culmination of the 15-Day Shraddha Ritual

This day is not only significant for its dedication to ancestors but also because it represents the conclusion of the 15-day Shraddha ritual. This year, both Mahalaya Amavasya and Pitru Visarjan Amavasya will be observed on Saturday, 14th October. In Bengal, this day receives special attention as ‘Mahalaya’, symbolizing the beginning of grand festivities. Furthermore, it also signifies the onset of the Bathukamma festival in the state of Telangana.

Rituals and Ceremonies on Mahalaya Amavasya

Upon the arrival of this day, devout followers perform Tarpan and Shraddha rituals, specifically for deceased family members who passed away on ‘Chaturdashi’, ‘Amavasya’, or ‘Poornima’. Those observing the rituals commence their day early, embracing the morning’s serenity. Donning yellow attire, they invite Brahmins into their homes, bestowing them with the utmost respect. The Shraddha ceremony is primarily spearheaded by the eldest male in the family. Once the Brahmins are seated, rituals ensue with incense, lamps, and flowers, creating an atmosphere of reverence.

Offerings of water and barley serve as a gesture to appease the ancestors. Additionally, a sacred thread is donned on the right shoulder, and bandages are donated, symbolizing protection and well-being. As the ceremonies progress, special dishes are prepared and presented to the Brahmins, with sesame seeds sprinkled on their seating area as a mark of respect.

Mahalaya Amavasya is more than just rituals; it’s a day of remembrance. Families unite in the memory of their ancestors, chanting mantras to seek their blessings. By thanking and apologizing to their ancestors, devotees aim to ensure their souls find eternal peace.

The Underlying Beliefs of Mahalaya Amavasya

The rituals of Mahalaya Amavasya are believed to bring blessings, well-being, and prosperity to those who perform them. It’s said that families are shielded from evils through the blessings of Lord Yama. Hindu scriptures mention that if, for some reason, an individual cannot perform the Shraddha rituals during the first 15 days, or if the death date is unknown, ‘Tarpan’ can be conducted on Sarvapitri Moksha day. This belief stems from the idea that ancestors visit their homes on Mahalaya Amavasya, and if rituals aren’t performed, they depart unhappily.

Furthermore, the concept of ‘Pitra Dosh’ in astrology indicates that if ancestors commit mistakes, their descendants may face its repercussions. By observing Shraddha on Mahalaya Amavasya, this ‘Pitra Dosh’ can be nullified, ensuring that ancestors’ souls achieve salvation and bestow blessings upon their lineage.

Conclusion

stands as a testament to the deep-rooted beliefs and traditions of Hinduism. It reminds us of the importance of remembering our ancestors and honoring their memory through rituals and ceremonies, ensuring peace, prosperity, and well-being for the present and future generations.
