Moscow: Amidst the Ukraine war, the Russian army is going to get a new invincible weapon. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has confirmed that the Russian Air Defense Forces will receive the S-500 air and missile defense system this year. He told that two new changes have also been made in this system. Shoigu said that this state-of-the-art system will be available in two forms.
First, it will be given as a ballistic missile defense system and second, it will be given in the form of a missile system that can shoot down fighter jets at longer ranges. The Russian S-500 missile system was first introduced in 2015. Since then, it was being designed continuously and in the year 2021, it was named Prometheus or God of Fire after this Greek god.
In May 2021, Putin had confirmed that the S-500 had been tested and it was successful. Recently, the Russian Army was quoted as saying that this missile system has been tested on a large scale. In this test, the Russian system demonstrated its ability to shoot down a hypersonic missile. Apart from this, the missile had also shot down a cruise missile fired from a nuclear submarine.
S-500 is considered to be a road-mobile air and missile defense system which is made by Russian company Almaz Antey. The range of this system is up to 600 km. This system can identify targets from a distance of 800 km. The S-500 system is capable of simultaneously targeting 10 supersonic missiles one after the other.
This air defense system is capable of shooting down missiles flying at a speed of hypersonic or Mach 10. The S-500 has such a high range that it is capable of destroying enemy missiles, spacecraft and weapons circling in low orbit in space.
In this state-of-the-art system, radar is also installed inside the missile itself. The S-500 can be combined with the S-400, S-300 and other platforms into a single air and missile defense network. Apart from the launchers, the S-500 also includes a command post vehicle, target identification radars, several other radars.
