The most awaited tennis extravaganza of the season has commenced with Punjab Marshalls and Mumbai Tennis Masters serving some sizzling tennis in the Champions Tennis League 2015 in Mumbai on Monday. When even the rain gods could not deter the fans from thronging the MSLTA stands, the two teams kicked off the league as well as their group campaign. The most crucial set between reigning US Open champion Flavia Pennetta (Mumbai Masters) and rising star Elina Svitolina was clinched by Mumbai Tennis Masters. Elina went down fighting 2-5 to the Grand Slam champ in a battle between experience and youth! Earlier in the Legends Singles, former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek of Mumbai clinching the first encounter against Punjab Marshall’s Greg Rusedski 5-4 via tie-break. This was the first of the five sets each team has to play. Punjab Marshalls is being represented by Marcos Baghdatis (Australian Open finalist 2006), Elina Svitolina (World No.19) and Saketh Myneni (India No.2) apart from team captain Britain’s Rusedski. Champions Tennis League follows a very unique format, aimed at getting maximum fun in minimum time while playing some quality tennis. Two teams clash in a ‘tie’ in which 5 sets – one each in legend’s singles, women’s singles, men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Winner of the set is a player/pair that wins 5 games. However, winner of the tie is the team that wins the highest number of games across all 5 sets! Mumbai Tennis Masters is being represented by Krajicek, Pennetta, Santiago Giraldo and Sriram Balaji. The women’s singles encounter will be followed by Mixed Doubles (Giraldo-Pennetta v Baghdatis-Svitolina), Men’s Doubles (Giraldo-Balaji v Baghdatis-Myneni) and Men’s Singles (Giraldo v Baghdatis). Punjab Marshalls, Mumbai Tennis Masters and Raipur Rangers make up Group A of the League and will play matches on Home and Away basis.
