Punjab arts council to take new steps to promote theatre in punjab

Punjab Arts Council and Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi organized a programme “Meeting with Young Theatre Artists” at Virsa Vihar Kendra, Amritsar on 18th June 2017 under the Chairmanship of Ms. Satinder Satti, Chairperson, Punjab Arts Council.

Ms. Satinder Satti, Chairperson, Punjab Arts Council has initiated this step to open dialogue with artists of Punjab. Young artists appreciated the effort of Punjab Arts Council. They said that in 50 years first time Arts Council took this initiative to connect with artists of Punjab.

Ms. Satinder Satti said that Punjab Arts Council in collaboration with Cultural Affairs Department Punjab will enhance the facilities for the upcoming young theatre artists and to teach them the modern techniques of theatre.

While interacting with the young theatre artists at Virsa Vihar Kendra, Amritsar, she said that Punjab Arts Council has already initiated the process of encouraging the young theatre artists with series of Nukar Nataks and Short Plays in the villages of Punjab. She also told that Punjab Arts Council has started the process to eliminate the Entertainment Tax from the Punjab Kala Bhawan shows if there are some tickets for the shows. Whenever it is done, all will be given facility to put ticket on their shows.

While initiating the meeting Sh. Kewal Dhaliwal President Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi said that this meeting is valuable as we want to know the ideas and difficulties of the artists which will be included in the fortcoming Culture Policy of Punjab. He also gave information of the programmes and activities of the Akademi.

Sh. Pritam Singh Rupal, Secretary, Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi said that Theatre is a struggle and the upcoming artists has to make much more hard work to make a name. He said that Theatrical presentation is not a product and audience is not a consumer. Theatre is a social responsibility.

About 100 artists from all over Punjab participated in this programme and they mentioned their difficulties as well as their suggestions for the promotion of art and culture in Punjab. They talked about the less number of theatres in Punjab, the irresponsibilities of Punjab Govt. about theatres, less fees decided by the Punjab Govt for theatrical performances. They also talked about the financial position of theatre persons.

While replying to the questions Ms. Satinder Satti said that if any Amateur Artists Group is willing to present their show in Chandigarh, Punjab Arts Council will provide them Open Air Theatre without any fee/any charges. She also told that Punjab Arts Council has a programme to organize 6 Festivals in Punjab, in which people from Villages and Cities will be gathered and they will enjoy the Punjabi Culture upto a maximum extent.

Kulbir Malik from Faridkot, Dr. Harpreet Lovely from Patiala, Renu Bansal from Phagwara, Suvidha Duggal from Amritsar, Natkesh from Verka, Gurtej Pandit, Amanual Singh, Vishu Sharma, Sunil Kumar from Malaut, Iktar, Loveleen from Chandigarh, Kranti , Narinder Gattu from Beas and Gautam Rishi were young artists from Punjab, who gave their views and suggestions in this programme.

Sh. Jaswnt Jass, Member, Executive Committee, Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi gave vote of thanks to all the participants.
