Considering the growing demand for translation and language related services in India as well as abroad, Punjab Technical University today launched PG Diploma Course and B.Sc in Technical Translation and Interpretation. This course will be started for the first time from the current session at the Mohali campus starting from July 2012. The course will not only cover Indian languages but other popular foreign language such as French, German and Spanish will also be covered.

Speaking to the media at the launch of this new course, Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor Punjab Technical University, said that considering the high demand and the gaps in terms of trained human resource in this field the university had decided to launch this course. These days translation is not only needed for the promotion of literature and cross cultural activities, it has become an essential tool for keeping pace with the globalization phenomenon which is inseparable from technology and localization processes, he added.

Answering the media queries Dr. Rajneesh Arora told that these courses will be taught in PTU only with the support of National Translation Mission. In order to further promote these courses in future we have also constituted Punjab Translation Expert Committee which includes Punjabi University, Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and language Experts of various language departments, he added.

Sh. Ravi Kumar, President Translators & Interpretators Association of India, who is also the Entrepreneur and Founder of Modlingua Group a leading translation company with 500 clients spread across the globe observed that ‘As per national knowledge commission is immediate requirement of 5 lac trained language professionals in India because Translation, Interpretation, localization, IT and Newer Technologies have added unprecedented dynamism in economic, social and cultural activities across the globe.’

Dr. Arora, said that to promote the language courses the existing infrastructure will be used for research and development activities in languages and technology linked to languages such as machine tools, memory tools, terminology management, project management and publication of specialized text. The university is also starting a SMS facility for the students as per which the queries of students would be answered within six hours.

Also present on the occasion were Dr. Prabhjot Kaur, Incharge PTU Mohali Campus, Sh. Vishwadeep, Faculty PTU Mohali Campus, Mr. Anshu Kataria, President, Chandigarh Management Association and other faculty members of the university.
