Prof. Thomas requests states to prepare perspective plan for the development of fisheries sector

INVC,, New Delhi,, Prof. K.V. Thomas, Minister of State for Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has requested the States to prepare perspective plans for the development of fisheries. The Minister was addressing the fifth meeting of the Governing Body of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) held here today. Presiding over the meeting as Vice Chairman, on behalf of Minister of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prof. Thomas urged the State Fisheries Department for better use of funds and technology provided by the NFDB. Prof. Thomas pointed out that the fisheries sector is providing livelihood to more than 14 millions fishers. He said, dovetailing the funds from RKVY, CSS and RIDF in addition to NFDB funds could be done to increase the investment base in the sector to enhance fish production in the country to reach 10 million tonne by 2012. The Chairman appreciated efforts of NFDB in preparing the action plan for a budget of Rs. 431 crore for the year 2010-11 and requested State Governments to gear up their machinery to absorb the resources. He exhorted the States to focus on enhancement of productivity in the reservoirs by creating adequate infrastructure especially in seed quality improvement. The Chairman also desired that the focus should be given a development of hatcheries and nurseries for quality seed and the States should become self-sufficient in seed production. Highlighting the importance of clean and hygienic markets and harbors the Chairman advised the States to create appropriate revenue generation and self-sufficient management structures for the harbors and the markets. The Minister urged the states to come up with suitable tariff for aquaculture and take up the matter with the respective state electricity boards. He directed the NFDB to finalize the insurance for aquaculture both for fish and shrimp. Prof. Abhijit Sen, Member, Planning Commission, State Fisheries Ministers of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Puduchery and Jammu & Kashmir and representatives of Ministry of Agriculture, Panchayat Raj, Food Processing, NABARD and Governing Body members representing fisheries federations/cooperatives, fishermen associations and sea food exporters associations participated in the meeting. Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries also addressed the meeting. images57
