Pankaj Mittal highlights the social face of the University

Universities, teachers and students have very important role in transforming the society. This was stated by Vice Chancellor of BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Mrs Pankaj Mittal, at a Seminar on the Role of Universities in Societal Development held today at Haryana Pavilion in IITF-2012. Highlighting the social activities undertaken by the University, Mrs Mittal said that BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya has established a Centre for Society-University Interface & Research. The Centre has started certificate courses in three fields-Integrated Energy Resource Management, Microfinance Practices and Folk Medicine Study of wind, water, sun and bio-mass as endless source of energy is done for the benefit of providing energy in the rural areas. Under microfinance practices, women are encouraged to become financially independent by adding to their income. Under folk medicine local knowledge about herbals and plants is collected for treatment of ailments, which is then standardized and documented. Students, as part of their studies are encouraged to adopt five families each to motivate the rural people for sending their children to school, maintain cleanliness and make them health conscious. Under NSS Scheme students present nukkar-nataks to motivate the people for eradicating social evils.  Mrs Mittal said that the students have developed utility machines for  The rural people like Upla Making Machine and a washing machine, which is run without electricity, just by cycling. While one keeps fit with cycling, the machine washes the clothes. Students also do the chemical analysis of the soil and suggest proper fertilizers. Water is also tested to suggest about removal of impurities.  Mrs Mittal said that this is besides the formal education being given  to the students in various professional courses. Starting with just 3 students as Gurukul, it has now developed into a University with 7000 students and is running courses from KG to Ph.D level. University has MOUs with various universities and about 200 foreign students visit the University every year. Out students have developed communication skills through English Language Labs and are full of confidence. Students do video conferencing with foreign students. Mrs Mittal said that besides developing over-all personality of students, the University is building bridges with the community. Practical training is given to the students at different centres like farms,homes and chaupals.  Visiting Professor of the University, Mr Kapil Kapoor said that  University is trying to develop wholesome personality of the students by  inculcating moral values in them, so that they become good human beings in addition to becoming good professionals. Villages mainly have three problems of energy, cleanliness and employment, he said. University tries to find the solutions through Centre for Society University Interface & Research.  Registrar of the University, Mrs Asha Kadian said that the University aims at developing multi-skilled youth with ability of communication to enhance the prospects of their employability. While the girl students have natural discipline, they are being empowered with the skills.

Bhardwaj. Professor Ms Manju Saroha and Mr Pankanj Nain assisted in
organizing the seminar.
