“Prisons” is a State subject under List II of the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution and Prison Administration is the responsibility of the State Governments. However, a number of measures have been taken by the Government of India to reduce overcrowding in jails. These include amendment in the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and introduction of the system of plea bargaining primarily to reduce pendency of cases in trial courts and overcrowding in prisons.For disposal of long pending sessions and other cases, Government of India has also set up 1562 Fast Track Courts for speedy disposal of cases.
