‘Nature & Wildlife Trek’ in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary

The celebration of the Wildlife Week-2012 was started by organizing a ‘Nature & Wildlife Trek’ in Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary and ‘Walk for Peace & Wildlife’ at the Sukhna Lake. Chief Guest Shri KK Sharma, IAS, Adviser to Administrator, UT Chandigarh flagged off the trek as well as the walk.

Approximately 250 people participated in the Nature & Wildlife trek . Entries were invited by the Forest Department through the print media and internet. All the facilities like- Medial , Drinking Water, Transport etc were provided at suitable locations on the trek, for the convenience of the participants. Senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration – Chairman Housing Board, Home Secretary, DGP, DIG, Secretary Forest & Wildlife, Conservator of Forests, Secretary, Rural Development & Culture, SSP & DC, UT Chandigarh also joined the trek.

A coffee table book on Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary was also released by the Chief Guest on this occasion. The book is informative and highlights the improved scientific management practices of the Wildlife sanctuary, Extension Activities of the department, Ecotourism etc. While Releasing the Coffee table book, the Shri Sharma desired that such nature trek shall be organized on regular basis so as to provide opportunity for residents of Chandigarh for Wildlife Tourism and to sensitize them towards Wildlife Conservation.

In another programme at Sukhna Lake approximately 450 participants of International Youth Peace Festival, from 45 Nations, joined the “Walk for Peace & Wildlife” from Plaza to Regulator end of the Sukhna Lake. The programme was organized by the NGO Yuvsatta in collaboration with Forest department, UT Chandigarh. It was also flagged off by Shri K. K Sharma, Adviser to Administrator . The function was attended by Shri D.K Tiwari, Secretary (Forest & Environment) and Shri Santosh Kumar, Conservator of Forests & Director ( Environment), UT Administration .

Wildlife week is celebrated every year in the first week of October to sensitize and create awareness among the masses for protection and conservation of Wildlife and its habitat.
