INVC NEWS
Mumbai  : A prominent cyber security firm has uncovered a significant data breach affecting a staggering 750 million Indian customers. This revelation has prompted the Department of Telecommunications to take swift action, urging service operators to conduct comprehensive security audits of their systems.

Alarming Claims

The Department’s directives came in response to claims made by the cyber security company, Cloudsec, alleging a breach compromising the personal information of 750 million Indian consumers. According to Cloudsec, hackers have been peddling sensitive data, amounting to 1.8 terabytes, of Indian mobile users on the dark web.

Response and Denial

Despite Cloudsec’s assertions, the alleged hacker has vehemently denied any involvement in the breach, asserting that the data was acquired through undisclosed means. Legal avenues are being pursued to verify the legitimacy of these claims, with investigations ongoing to determine the source of the leaked information.

Government Intervention

In light of the breach, government officials have directed telecommunications operators to conduct thorough security audits on their systems. However, officials have also clarified that the leaked information, as mentioned in the Cloudsec report, appears to consist of historical data rather than a recent breach, alleviating immediate concerns regarding system vulnerabilities.

Collaborative Investigation

In response to the breach, cyber security experts from Cloudsec have joined forces with affiliates CyboDIVIL and Unit8200 to delve deeper into the matter. The recent advertisement for the sale of an extensive “Indian Mobile Network Subscriber Database,” containing critical details such as names, mobile numbers, addresses, and Aadhaar information, has raised further alarms.

Official Confirmation

Officials from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) and affiliated cyber intelligence units have confirmed that the incident came to their attention on January 23. Subsequently, Cloudsec promptly notified relevant authorities and organizations about the breach, initiating a coordinated response to mitigate potential risks.

Collaborative efforts

This data breach serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threat posed by cyber attackers and the importance of robust security measures to safeguard sensitive consumer information. While investigations into the breach are ongoing, collaborative efforts between government agencies, cyber security firms, and industry stakeholders are crucial in addressing such threats and bolstering the resilience of India’s digital infrastructure.
