Marathon held to strengthened Project Nanhi Kali, a support towards girl child

INVC, Chandigarh, KC Mahindra Education Trust, a CSR wing of Mahindra & Mahindra in association of Naandi Foundation today organized a Mahindra Marathon 13. The marathon witnessed enthusiastic participation of over 300 employees with their family members which started from Mahindra Swaraj Plant 1, Phase IV, Mohali covering PTL Chowk and Diplast Chowk and finally ends at Mahindra Swaraj premises. The marathon was flagged off by Mr Harish Chavan, Chief Operating officer, Mahindra & Mahindra Swaraj Division . The objective of Mahindra Marathon 13 was to promote project Nanhi Kali which is a solidarity towards girl child by the means of public awareness. At the outset a special Nanhi kali donation cum subscription counter was also placed which received very encouraging response as many runners came forward to sponsor a nanhi kali. A total of thirty thousand rupees was collected from the participants.  According to MLN Patnaik, DGM, HR, Mahindra Swaraj, “Nanhi Kali is an initiative of the Mahindra & Mahindra which aims at generating an understanding of the issues of an inverse gender ratio. The project Nanhi Kali seeks to use the strength and adaptability of human faith. We have received a massive response from this marathon to bring awareness about Project Nanhi kali. By organizing such means, we firmly believe that it helps in positive changing the mindset of people towards girl child”   Project Nanhi Kali, meaning little bud, was incepted in 1996 with the objective of building an educated and literate Indian female population which in turn would have a positive multiplier effect on the Indian economy. The Project is a sponsorship programme which aims to provide 10 years of quality education and reduce the high rate of drop outs among girl children from socially and economically marginalised families. The project is jointly managed by K.C Mahindra Education Trust and the Naandi Foundation.  The programme selects girls based on multiple criteria including enrollment in government schools, family income, parents’ educational background, social background and the child’s aptitude. A comprehensive sponsorship is created to take care of a range of their educational requirements, providing not only academic support but also material support including uniforms, school bag, shoes socks etc. that enables the girl child to attend school with dignity. The Nanhi Kali team also works with the parents and community to sensitize them on gender equity. Project Nanhi Kali currently supports the education of over 78,000 underprivileged girl children from poor urban, remote rural, tribal and conflict afflicted communities. Project Nanhi Kali is a participatory project where any individual or corporate can sponsor the education of a disadvantaged girl child for only Rs. 2400 a year for a girl studying in class 1 – 5 and  Rs. 3600 a year for a girl studying in class 6-10.  Each Nanhi Kali donor receives a detailed profile of the girl they sponsor along with her photograph and two progress reports to keep them updated of how she is faring in both academic as well as extracurricular activities. The marathon was held under the aegis of mahindra employees social option that is a group CSR initiative of mahindra.
