Mondreti Sridhar has taken over the additional charge of the Director General of Geological Survey of India on 27th January 2020. Prior to this, he was holding the post of Additional Director General of Southern Region and was posted at Hyderabad.
Mondreti Sridhar is an alumnus of Rajahmundry Arts College. He obtained a degree in Geology from Andhra University in 1980 and did his Masters’ from Osmania University in 1983. He did his M.Tech. on Hydrogeology from the same institution in 1985. Sri Sridhar started his career in Geological Survey of India, Sikkim Office in 1986 where he carried out extensive geological studies of Himalayas. Subsequently, he worked in various capacities in Geological Survey of India across the country. He was associated with many diamond exploration projects and discovered several kimberlite and lamproite (diamond bearing rocks) pipes in Nalgonda, Raichur and Anananthapur districts of Andhra Pradesh. His immense contribution in the field of diamond exploration has fetched him the prestigious National Mineral Award for 2005 in the mineral discovery category. His works on kimberlites and lamproites have also been published in many national and international journals of repute. As Additional Director General and HoD of Southern Region, he had been steering the planning, programming and implementation of various geoscientific projects of national importance.
After assuming the office of DG, GSI, Shri Sridhar said, “Geological Survey of India would look to focus on the programmes of core national importance in the field of mineral resources and to aim for more visibility of departmental activities by adopting proactive measures like more interaction and engagements with mining sector, downstream industries and R&D institutes”. He also stated that, “More emphasise will be placed on R&D activities with revitalisation of laboratories and field activities for better delivery of results particularly in the mineral exploration and in Public Good Service domain that Geological Survey of India has been delivering so effectively for a long time”.
