Lieutenant General GS Shergill, retired today after 38 years of glorious service and challenging assignments across the country.  Commissioned in June 1977 in 8 SIKH, Lt. Gen. Shergill has been a dexterous commander and leader with extensive experience and notable contributions at tactical, operational and strategic levels in operational and logistic planning and execution. He has also made noteworthy contributions in Human Resource Management and technology assimilation and implementation at all levels of the army.

As Chief of Staff, HQ Central Command, in the last two years, Lt. Gen Shergill has given a facelift to the entire Lucknow Cantonment with special emphasis on the Command HQ complex and its institutions like the Smritika War Memorial, Surya Officers Institute, the Officers’ Mess etc. He has also infused new energy in functioning of ECHS and the Cantonment Board. He has put into effect a de novo logistics system for the Central theatre spanning seven states and has contributed in synergising joint civil military functioning.

As Chief Staff Officer, Strategic Forces Command, he was awarded a Vishisht Seva Medal for management of strategic assets.

He has been a Counter Terrorism/Insurgency expert having commanded a brigade and a division in J&K. As GOC, he was awarded a Vishisht Seva Medal for conceptualising an effective counter insurgency strategy with a definitive national aim. In J&K, he contributed immensely in reconstruction after the Poonch earthquake of 2005, opening up a new road to Rawla and by construction of a model village.  He has also served as a United Nations Observer in Central America and El Salvador.

He has had the privilege and honour of being Colonel of the Regiment of the world famous Sikh Regiment of the Indian Army, one of the highest decorated regiments with 1652 gallantry awards including 2 Param Vir Chakras,  14 Maha Vir Chakras, 68 Vir Chakra, 2 Ashok Chakras and 21 Indian Order of Merit.
