Legal luminary Gian Singh Mungo to head AAP's state legal wing
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Punjab, has made a major reshuffle in its state legal wing by appointing prominent legal luminary Gian Singh Mungo, as its president with immediate effect.
The announcement was made at a press conference held in Chandigarh on Monday, addressed by Leader of Opposition (LoP), Harpal Singh Cheema and Kotkapura MLA, Kultar Singh Sandhwan. Others who were present on the occasion, included former legal wing president, advocate Jastej Singh Arora, political review committee chairman, Harchand Singh Bursat, state core committee member and treasurer, Sukhwinder Sukhi, state trade wing president, Nina Mittal, senior leader, Karanbir Singh Tiwana and a large lawyers, including Pardeep Malhotra, Jagtar Singh Rajla (Ex-MLA), Makhan Singh, Paramjit Verma, Gurjant Singh, Narendra Singh Tiwana, Harjider Singh, Samrbir Singh, Yaadwinder Singh ‘Goldi’, Sukhdeep Singh Hundal, Madan Arora and Gurdev Singh Devmann
Harpal Singh Cheema said “As a professional lawyer myself, I may say with certain amount of confidence that advocate Gian Singh Mungo is, besides being a dedicated worker of the AAP, a prominent face in the legal world. He held the fort as president of the Bar Council, Nabha, consecutively for 19 long years.”
The LoP said that during the 10-year rule of the BJP-SAD government, mafia rule gained ground in the state and now three years of the Captain Amarinder Singh government’s dismal performance, the state of affairs have come to such pass where the legal fraternity could play a proactive role to restore the state its lost ground by buying justice to the politically persecuted people.
He informed that the Aam Aadmi Party, cutting across party lines, had decided to extend free legal aid to such victims in the state. “I may say for sure that Gian Singh Mungo and his team will set an example by proving their mettle by buying justice for those oppressed. Cheema also lauded the role of the outgoing legal wing president, Jastej Singh Arora on the occasion.
Kultar Singh Sandhwan said that there was no government worth the name in the state and that the law order machinery had gone for a toss. Due to the deteriorating law and order situation, the lives of common people had become a virtual hell. He alleged as there was no government worth the name, people of the state had to go about for the redressal of their grievances, adding that in a situation like this, party’s legal wing would play a pivotal role.
Speaking on the occasion, the president-designate, Advocate Gian Singh Mungo, said that he would put in his best to live up to the peoples’ and party’s expectations. He said that two months after the Delhi assembly elections, the party would set up legal help desk in the state, from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to tehsil level.
