Krishna Tirath, Minister for Women and Child Development felicitated the winners of the National Bravery Awards 2012 here today. She congratulated the children and their parents/guardians, and said that it is this indomitable spirit in the children which makes them the beacon holders of the future. She said it is the bravery that these children have shown in their ordinary environments and circumstances which have made them extraordinary. They have inspired other children, the Minister stated. Of the 22 recipients 18 are boys and four are girls. While some have rescued children and elders from drowning, others have saved their siblings and family members from fire, being robbed and killed at the hands of thieves. One girl saved her younger sister from being mauled by a cheetah, and another walked away from a child marriage and reported the matter to the authorities. One child died while rescuing some other children from drowning. The Minister while speaking at the occasion stated that it is necessary to sensitise children from the childhood itself to groom them into responsible citizens of the country. She said that they are the right messengers to carry social messages and to remove social evils. In order to create a safer environment for children in the country, it is important to change the mindset within the society, the Minister added. The recipients of the National Bravery awards were present at the function with their parents and guardians. Also present at the function were senior officers from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, ICCW, NCPCR and NIPCCD.
