Chennai,

Krea University and The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values (“The Center”) have announced a formal agreement at Chennai today to reimagine and co-create the ethics learning experience for Krea University’s undergraduate students. Krea University has a distinct focus on promoting ethical reasoning and decision-making to prepare future leaders for an increasingly complex and uncertain world. The Center would help Krea deliver an innovative ethics curriculum to its undergraduate students.

Krea University, an upcoming Liberal Arts and Sciences University, will commence classes for its first batch of undergraduate students in August 2019. Krea is pioneering interwoven learning – weaving the arts with the sciences, and intellectual inquiry with experiential education. Ethics education forms an integral part of Krea’s interwoven learning approach, as ethics constitutes one of the eight guiding principles for curriculum laid out by Krea’s academic council. Ethics is also proposed as a mandatory skill course for all undergraduate students.

Speaking on the occasion, Krea University’s Vice-Chancellor Sunder Ramaswamy said “this partnership will provide an exciting opportunity for young minds at Krea to engage with ethical questions, find their sense of purpose and understand the societal impact of their actions”. The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi, Founding President and CEO of the Dalai Lama Center said “This is a unique opportunity for both institutions to help bring ethical learning and leadership at the center of education to nurture a new generation of young leaders for the challenging times we live in. Ethics should not just be taught as a separate subject but should permeate all forms of learning in the undergraduate curriculum, as well as the ethos and culture of Krea”. The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi will also be a Visiting Professor of Practice in Humanities at Krea University.

The Center will start facilitating sessions with Krea faculty members on ethical learning and pedagogy early next year. Beyond ethics in the curriculum, Krea University aspires to continue setting high ethical standards as an institution.

The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values is dedicated to inquiry, dialogue, and education on the ethical and humane dimensions of life. As a collaborative and nonpartisan think tank, The Center focuses on the development of interdisciplinary research and programs in varied fields of knowledge, from science and technology to education and international relations. Our programs emphasize responsibility and examines meaningfulness and moral purpose between individuals, organizations, and societies.

Six Noble Peace laureates including The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu serve as the Founding Members of The Center. Since its inception at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009, The Center’s programs have expanded to 8 countries.
