New Delhi : Karva Chauth is a revered festival celebrated predominantly by married Hindu women. It falls on the moonrise Vyapi Chaturthi day of the Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month, with this year’s observance slated for November 1st. The festival transcends the simple act of fasting; it serves as a day to fortify the marital bond and attract good fortune.
The Fasting Method: A Daylong Devotion
Women observing the Karva Chauth fast undertake a Nirjala fast, abstaining from water and food from dawn until dusk. The fast is broken only upon sighting the moon at night. Here’s how to observe the fast:
1. Morning Rituals: The Initial Pledge
After bathing in the morning, women should perform Aachman and pledge for the well-being of their husbands and families. The day begins with the worship of Hindu deities like Shiva, Parvati, Kartikeya, Ganesha, and Chandra.
2. Moonrise Rituals: Breaking the Fast
Upon moonrise, women break their fast by first offering Arghya to the moon. Only after this ritual do they consume water and food.
3. Offerings and Dakshina
Post the moon worship, it’s customary to donate items like rice, urad dal, vermilion, bangles, ribbons, suhaag materials, and a karva made of copper or clay.
4. Blessings from the Mother-in-Law
Women then present their mother-in-law with 14 puris or sweets, suhaag materials, fruits, and dry fruits, seeking blessings by touching her feet.
5. Special Rituals for Newlyweds
Newly married women observe this fast with additional rituals, which include gifting a 14-section Kalash, vessel, fruits, sweets, bayan, wedding accessories, and a saree to their mother-in-law.
The Myth: The Tale of Veeravati
The significance of Karva Chauth is further accentuated by the ancient myth of Veeravati, a woman who mistakenly broke her fast before moonrise and faced tragic consequences. Upon adhering to corrective rituals, her husband was miraculously revived, underscoring the importance of observing the fast with complete devotion.
