Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) announcement of supporting Uniform Civil Code for the countrymen in principle can prove to be a big blow to the opposition unity.
AAP’s National General Secretary (Organisation) and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak said that in principle we are supporting the Uniform Civil Code. Article 44 of the constitution also supports it. Since this issue pertains to all religious communities, there should be extensive deliberations and efforts to build a consensus. Explain that Article 44 of the Constitution states that the state shall endeavor to ensure a uniform civil code for citizens throughout India.
The remarks of the AAP leader are considered very important keeping in mind the 2024 general elections. This has come especially in the backdrop of the BJP’s renewed push for a Uniform Civil Code, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the country cannot run on two laws. In the same way different laws cannot be followed. It is the same thing that different rules cannot work for different members of a family.
After the opposition meeting in Patna last week to chalk out a joint strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, CM Arvind Kejriwal had said that it would be very difficult for AAP to be part of any alliance that includes the Congress. That is until the Congress opposes the ordinance brought by the Center in Delhi.
They say that the Centre’s ordinance tries to control the bureaucrats in Delhi. The Ordinance states that it aims to provide a comprehensive scheme of administration of services that balances the local and domestic interests of the people of Delhi with the democratic will of the entire country as reflected through the President of India.
Pathak said that it is necessary for the opposition parties to come together and remove the BJP from power. But it will depend on the attitude of the Congress party towards other opposition parties. ( PLC/GT )
