New Delhi,
Further strengthening the commitment to make a difference in the lives of people bound by wheelchair, the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre has purchased the franchise of Delhi Superstar wheelchair cricket team, which is one of the six participating cricket teams of 2018 Indian Wheel Chair Cricket Premiere League. Through this initiative ISIC is not only supporting 16 cricketers but also making a larger impact by associating with major event.

Organized by the Wheelchair Talent Foundation in association with Disabled Supporting Society, Agra, the Indian Wheel Chair Cricket Premiere League will commence on June 20th till June 24th at Bal Bhawan International School Ground in Dwarka. The event will see 6 wheelchair teams contesting against each other and will have over 100 athletes playing cricket over the 4 days.

“Owning the Delhi team when the event is happening in Delhi is a special feeling. We are happy that the team will receive a lot of home-support. However, the initiative is directed towards encouraging the entire wheelchair sporting fraternity. As a healthcare service provider which specializes in spinal injuries, we witness closely what a patient goes through when due to an injury the person is limited to wheelchairs. Rehabilitating them to an independent state has been one of our major challenges as well as major successes. Therefore, it gives unique pleasure in supporting a team and an event like this. ” Dr. Chitra Kataria, Chief of Rehabilitation Services, Indian Spinal Injuries Center (ISIC), New Delhi said.

India has been playing wheelchair cricket for 10 years. From recreational activity to a major goal of representing the country at International levels, these differently abled athletes have found the meaning of life and motivation through cricket.

The event will commence with a road show followed by the opening ceremony on 20th June. The Road Show will begin from Ashoka Apartments Sector 12, Dwarka to the venue, which will be followed by the opening ceremony. A friendly match would be played between Delhi Police and Dwarka City team will mark the beginning of the event. The league matches would continue from 21st June, with semi-final matches being held on 23rd June. The finals match is scheduled on 24th June, which would be followed by the closing ceremony.

“We deeply believe that sporting culture amongst specially abled people need to be encouraged in India. Not only these events give a meaning and purpose to their lives but also provide avenues of earning livelihood. Apart from the medical and rehabilitative assistance, it requires a tremendous mental strength and faith on oneself to bounce back in life like these people and showcase talents like none other”, said Dr. Chitra Kataria, Chief of Rehabilitation Services, Indian Spinal Injuries Center (ISIC), New Delhi.

Star Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag and Navjot Singh Siddhu, are among the patrons of this initiative, along the likes of Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and former Parliamentarian, Shri Ajay Maken.
