Introducing tinashe nyamudoka, wine steward & rising star At one&only cape town

Inter Hotel Challenge - Tinashe NyamudokaINVC, Cape Town, If, as a child, someone had told Tinashe Nyamudoka that he would one day be working in one of the best resort hotels in the world and rubbing shoulders with celebrities and a jet set clientele he would have laughed. Not only has this become a reality, but since joining One&Only Cape Town when it opened in 2009, Tinashe has carved an indelible name for himself at the internationally recognised, award-winning urban resort. Together with head sommelier, Luvo Ntezo, who has been a mentor from his earliest wine appreciation days, Tinashe has entertained thousands of diners, introducing them to the wonders of South African wines and sharing special vintages from the 5000-bottle strong One&Only Cape Town cellar. Tinashe’s rise through the ranks is certainly testament to the One&Only’s unique culture of mentorship and the provision of opportunities to those who might not otherwise have received them. Of course, Tinashe’s affable nature, his drive and determination, an ability to retain and impart information and of course an outstanding wine tasting ability is all his own.  Zimbabwe-born, Tinashe grew up in a culture he says “that knows nothing about wine… during my first hospitality industry interview for a waiter position back in 2008 I didn’t even know you got red and white grapes”, he laughs. It was a subsequent interview at One&Only Cape Town that proved the catalyst into becoming a rising star sommelier – it wasn’t long before the Food & Beverage Manager conducting the interview realised his burgeoning wine talent and he was immediately despatched to Luvo and the sommelier team. The rest, as they say, is history.  Over the course of the last four-and-a-half years Tinashe’s learning curve has been sharp indeed, with a series of courses and learnerships undertaken since joining the resort.  2013 has seen Tinashe undertake further studies at the prestigious Cape Wine Academy. Most exciting for this young sommelier star is the fact that his endeavours have recently been recognised and rewarded with an international sommelier opportunity. Tinashe is the winner of the 2013 Inter-Hotel Challenge, a gruelling competition and mentorship programme curated by industry doyenne Annette Kesler. The competition is designed to provide opportunity for talented, hotel-based trainee chefs and sommeliers through a series of challenges and as the winner of the sommelier category Tinashe will be a South African representative at The White Club, a prestigious members-only club for connoisseurs of the finest and rarest wines in the world. Through his ambassadorial duties, Tinashe will travel to Switzerland, furthering his wine knowledge and flying the flag for One&Only Cape Town as he rubs shoulders with the world’s best noses and most well-heeled wine aficionados.  Of his career trajectory, Tinashe says “One&Only Cape Town gave me a chance and since then, I’ve done one wine course after another. I hope I never lose my thirst for knowledge and my passion for this incredible industry”. The feeling no doubt, is absolutely mutual.
