International Workshop on ”Achieving Drinking Water Security in Water Stressed and Quality Affected Areas”

INVC,, Delhi,, A two day long International Workshop on ”Achieving Drinking Water Security in Water stressed and Quality Affected Areas” is being organised by the Deptt. of Drinking Water Supply on May 25-26 at the India Habitat Centre ,New Delhi to discuss several issues related to the ensured delivery of drinking water in the rural areas across the country. The workshop in collaboration with World Bank and Water & Sanitation Programme –South Asia will be inaugurated by the Union Minister for Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Dr.C.P.Joshi. Issues like Drinking Water Security -Challenges and Issues in India, Water Conservation and Water Use Efficiency – a Presentation experience from Israel, Service Delivery- presentations on experience from Australia, South Africa,, Water Quality issues-experience from China along with panel discussions and Q&As will mark the proceedings on day one. During the break-out session three Groups would discuss the measures to be taken for: (i) Desert Areas; (ii) Overexploited and Drought prone areas; (iii) Quality Affected Areas. The objective is to prepare a Matrix on legal, policy, institutional, technology options and good practices to achieve water drinking security. Group Reports and Best Practices from India, Experiences from states like Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Gujarat, Karnataka would be shared among the participants. Key elements of the Matrix of legal, policy, institutional, technology and good practices options to achieve water drinking security in water stressed and water quality affected areas will emerge during the two day course of workshop. Nearly 20 distinguished speakers from India and abroad are expected to address the workshop including Mr.Roberto Zagha Country Director, World Bank, Dr. Mihir Shah, Member, Planning Commission, Mr. Christopher Juan Costain, WSP-SA,Mr. Shimon Tal President of Israeli Water Association , Dr. Gauri Sankar Ghoshetc. Among the NGOs , Ms Sunita Narain from CSE, Shri. Rajendra Singh from Tarun Bharat Sangh, Shri Anna Hazare and Shri Popat Rao Pawar from Hiwre Bazaar would take part in the deliberations, The SecretaryWater Resources, Deptt. of Administrative Reforms and DG ,ICAR along with Principal Secretaries/Secretaries/ Head of Department in charge of rural drinking water supply, water resources and irrigation and agriculture of 20 States having water stressed and water quality affected areas have been invited to participate in the workshop. images106
