There are many stories about the birth of Lord Ganesha in Sanatan Dharma. Out of anger, Lord Shiva severed Ganesha’s head from the torso, later on the behest of Mother Parvati, he applied the head of an elephant, but the severed head of Ganesha was kept by Shiva in a cave. It is believed that this cave is located in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. It is known as Patal Bhubaneswar.

It is said that it is also described in Skanda Purana. The place where this head was kept is known as Patal Bhuvaneshwar. The idol of Ganesha seated at this place is called Adiganesh. Patal Bhubaneswar cave is the center of faith of the devotees. This cave is about 90 feet inside the giant hill. According to belief, this cave was discovered by Adishankaracharya.

Just above the rock-cut idol of Lord Ganesha in the Patal Bhubaneshwar cave, the 108-petalled Shavashtak Dal Brahmakamal is adorned. From this Brahmakamal, a divine drop of water drips on the rock-like head of Lord Ganesha. The main drop is seen falling in the mouth of Adiganesh. It is believed that this Brahmakamal was established here by Lord Shiva.
Kedarnath, Badrinath and Amarnath are also visible from here. Badrinath has rock-cut sculptures of Badri Panchayat which include Yama-Kuber, Varuna, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Garuda.

The figure of Takshak Nag is also seen in the rock made in the cave. There is a cave of Baba Amarnath above this Panchayat and huge cobwebs of stone are spread. In this cave, the tongue of Kalbhairav can be seen. It is believed that if a man enters the womb through the mouth of Kalbhairav and reaches the tail, then he attains salvation.
