Himachal Pradesh was one of the few States in the Country in 2008 which had reserved 50 percent seats for women in Panchayati Raj and Local Bodies : Dhumal

INVC,, Shimla,, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister gave a clarion call to the people of the State to contribute actively in protection and preservation of the environment for the sake of future generations. He was addressing a mammoth public meeting today at Sihunta in remote area of Chamba district, after laying foundation stone of Tribal Multipurpose Hall to be constructed at a cost Rs. 33 lakh. Chief Minister said that the State Government had decided to solve the problems of the people on the spot when ever Ministers and Senior Officers visit field. He said that he himself had been meeting maximum number of people, listening to their grievances and finding solutions to these. He said that the exercise of ‘Prashashan Janta Ke Dwar’ programme aimed at providing people residing in the rural and remote areas of the state, opportunity to express their grievances in person to him thereby saving their time and money they otherwise had been spending over approaching the concerned authorities at district and state levels. Prof. Dhumal said that Himachal Pradesh was one of the few States in the Country in 2008 which had reserved 50 percent seats for women in Panchayati Raj and Local Bodies, which was overwhelmingly received by the public of the State and over 58 percent of women had been elected to different Panchayati Raj Institutions in the state. He said that it was during his last term as Chief Minister that the women were provided 33 percent reservation in the PRIs and the experiment was a grand success. He said that the objective behind providing the reservation was to involve women folk actively in development process. He said that the elected women representatives had contributed towards developmental requirements of the areas they represented, significantly. He said that the state government was committed to empower women and provide them every opportunity to progress ahead and become self reliant in all respects.
