New Delhi : The government has issued new guidelines for the handling of petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi. At the same time, instructions have been given to impose a fine of Rs 5000 to Rs 10000 on those using old vehicles in public places.

Under the guidelines issued by the Transport Department, the enforcement agency has been directed to immediately start a sustained campaign to remove old vehicles from public places in Delhi in a phased manner.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, an organization of 15,000 automobile dealers of the country, has welcomed the campaign of the Delhi government.

The Indian government aims to scrap more than 1 crore unfit vehicles. This will help in reducing pollution, improving road and passenger safety.

The challenge of removing old vehicles from the roads in the country is big. The Road Transport Ministry claims that old vehicles pollute the environment 10 to 12 times more and this also weakens the safety of passengers on the roads.
