Mumbai : In an effort to curb the alarming rise of tobacco-related health issues, the Maharashtra government has taken a firm stance by retaining the ban on gutkha, flavored pan masala, and other tobacco products. This decisive action, re-enforced today, Thursday 20 July, for one year, aims to protect the younger generation from falling prey to the harmful effects of these addictive substances. In 2015-16, 151 cases of oral cancer were detected, and the number increased to a staggering 859 in 2016-17. Moreover, the illegal sale and production of tobacco products led to a significant economic burden of up to 60 percent on the government. The ban aimed to alleviate this burden and promote a healthier society.
The Extent of the Issue
Despite the ban, the smuggling and distribution of gutkha and pan masala continue to be a serious concern. Smugglers transport these products in large quantities from other states into Maharashtra, using trucks and other vehicles for distribution in local markets. Over the last nine years, the Food and Drug Administration has seized a substantial 355 kilo tonnes of banned gutkha, amounting to a value of Rs 78 lakh. The scale of the problem necessitates constant vigilance and stringent measures to combat this illegal activity.

The Food and Drug Administration, in conjunction with law enforcement agencies, has been relentlessly conducting raids across various locations to seize smuggled gutkha. The crackdown has resulted in the registration of 8,235 cases and 9,153 court filings against individuals involved in this illicit trade.
