New Delhi : Relief from the bone-chilling cold is finally on the horizon for Kashmir and North India as the dry spell that has gripped the region for the past 40 days is set to break.
The period from December 20 to the end of January, known as Chillai Kalan, typically sees intense cold with heavy snowfall and rain. However, this year has been an anomaly, with the entire period passing without a drop of rain or snow.

Meteorological Department Projections

The Meteorological Department has issued forecasts predicting heavy rainfall from January 31 to February 4, bringing much-needed relief to the region. Snowfall is also expected in the hilly areas of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during this period. This anticipated change in weather patterns comes as welcome news for residents who have endured weeks of dry and bitter cold.

Impact of Western Disturbance

The anticipated weather change is attributed to the influence of a western disturbance, which is expected to bring about a shift in atmospheric conditions. This disturbance is likely to result in rain and snowfall across the affected regions, alleviating the prolonged dry spell and providing respite from the harsh winter conditions.

Reduction in Rainfall

The month of January has witnessed a significant reduction in rainfall across several states, including Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, with precipitation levels plummeting to 99 to 100 percent below normal. However, the upcoming week promises improved conditions, with intermittent rain forecasted for the next seven days in various regions.

Regional Forecasts

The Meteorological Department has outlined specific forecasts for different regions, with Himachal Pradesh expected to experience rain on January 31st and February 1st, and Uttarakhand also anticipating rain on January 31st. Additionally, intermittent rain is forecasted for Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh over the next two days.

Wind and Snowfall Projections

In addition to rain, strong winds are expected to sweep across Punjab and Haryana, accompanied by considerable snowfall in mountainous areas on February 2nd and 3rd. However, despite the anticipated precipitation, minimal increase in winter temperatures is projected, with the Meteorological Department estimating a rise of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures.

Dry cold spell

As the dry cold spell finally comes to an end, residents of Kashmir and North India can look forward to much-needed relief in the form of rain and snowfall. The forecasts provided by the Meteorological Department offer hope for improved weather conditions in the coming days, bringing an end to the prolonged period of drought and bitter cold. With projections indicating a shift in atmospheric patterns, it is anticipated that the region will experience a welcome respite from the harsh winter conditions that have prevailed in recent weeks.
