:Education Department of UT Chandigarh has started distribution of free text books w.e.f. 8 March, 2010 to all the 93423 children enrolled in govt. schools in classes I to VIII in order to ensure that children have books in hands in the beginning of the new academic session. The books for 67239 children are being provided out of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan funds and to remaining 26184 children out of UT Chandigarh budget. Text books have been procured from NCERT and Punjab School Education Board. However, three titles prescribed for class VII could not be distributed so far due to their non availability with the NCERT. Similarly, Punjabi language I and II text books are being procured from Punjab School Education Board. As soon as the books are procured the schools will be informed. The books are supplied to schools as per their requirement. A total amount of Rs. One crore five lakhs has been spent on purchase of these text books.
