Haridwar, Kashi: Devshayani Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashada according to the Hindu calendar. It is known as the “sleeping time” of Lord Vishnu because it marks the beginning of His rest period. Lord Vishnu is believed to sleep on this day and wakes up after four months on Prabodhini Ekadashi.

In 2023, Devshayani Ekadashi is observed on Thursday, June 29. The fasting period begins at 3:18 AM on June 29 and ends at 2:42 AM on June 30. The fast is broken on the next day, and the recommended time for breaking the fast (Paran) is between 1:48 PM and 4:36 PM on June 30. The Hari Vasar period ends at 8:20 AM on the Paran Tithi.

Devshayani Ekadashi is also known by other names such as Padma Ekadashi, Ashadhi Ekadashi, and Harishayani Ekadashi.

It is essential to observe Ekadashi fast until the completion of the Dwadashi Tithi. If the Dwadashi Tithi ends before sunrise, the fast should be concluded after sunrise. Failing to break the fast within the Dwadashi Tithi is considered a sin.

The fast should not be broken during Hari Vasar, which is the first one-fourth period of the Dwadashi Tithi. It is recommended to break the fast early in the morning and avoid doing so during midday. If unable to break the fast in the morning, it can be done after midday.

In some cases, Ekadashi fasting is observed for two consecutive days. When this happens, the smart-family members should fast on the first day. The second day is called “Second Fortnight” or “Duji Ekadashi.” Sannyasis, widows, and devotees seeking salvation should fast on Duji Ekadashi. If Ekadashi fasting is for two days, Duji Ekadashi and Vaishnav Ekadashi coincide.

Devotees who seek the love and affection of Lord Vishnu are advised to observe Ekadashi fast on both the days when it occurs for two consecutive days.
