Delhi Police has seized over 13,000 kg of firecrackers being stored and sold in the national capital

Despite a complete ban on the sale of firecrackers, the Delhi Police has seized over 13,000 kg of firecrackers being stored and sold in the national capital in the last 19 days.

According to the data shared by the police, from October 1 to October 19, a total of 13,767.719 kg of firecrackers were seized which were put for storage or sale and a total of 75 firecrackers were recorded.

Since the sale of firecrackers was banned in the national capital, the police team has arrested several people for selling, storing and supplying illegal firecrackers in different operations across the city.

A senior police officer said that police teams are working continuously to crack down on the sale of firecrackers and police teams from across the city are also conducting surprise inspections.

“Police teams are also taking strict action against those selling, storing and supplying firecrackers,” he said.

Ahead of rising air pollution and Diwali, the Delhi government on Wednesday announced that bursting crackers in the city on Diwali will attract a jail term of up to six months and a fine of Rs 200.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had said, “Production, storage, sale and use of all types of firecrackers have been banned with immediate effect. Also, this time online purchase and distribution of firecrackers was also banned in Delhi.” and this ban will last till January 1, 2023. Along with this, a joint action plan will be prepared with Delhi Police, DPCC and Revenue Department to strictly implement the ban.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Delhi High Court refused to entertain a plea challenging the complete ban on firecrackers in the national capital by the Arvind Kejriwal-led government.

Two petitioners engaged in the storage and sale of green firecrackers approached the High Court challenging the Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s (DPCC) order which mandated the completion of manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of all types of firecrackers in the capital by next year. Kind of banned. PLC/GT
