Currency Update: Bank Clarifies Guidelines for 2000 Note Exchange and Deposits

Mumbai – : According to the mail sent by HDFC Bank on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the following information was provided:

  1. Legal Tender: The 2000 rupee note is still considered legally valid currency. It can be used for transactions at any establishment and can also be accepted as payment from others.
  2. Easy Deposit: Customers were informed that they can deposit any number of 2000 rupee notes in HDFC Bank until September 30. However, they need to adhere to the RBI guidelines for note deposits. If depositing notes worth more than 50,000 rupees, PAN (Permanent Account Number) will need to be provided.
  3. Exchange Process: HDFC Bank stated that customers can easily exchange a maximum of 10 two thousand rupee notes or a total amount not exceeding Rs 20,000. This exchange facility is available at any HDFC Bank branch across the country starting from May 23, 2023, until September 30, 2023.

SBI (State Bank of India) and PNB (Punjab National Bank), two prominent government banks in India, have also issued advisories regarding the exchange of 2000 rupee notes. They clarified that no forms, slips, or ID cards are required for exchanging 2000 rupee notes at their branches.
