Cooperation between India and Mozambique in the field of Geology and Mineral Resources

Mohmmad Aarif,, INVC,, Delhi,, A high level delegation led by Ms. Esperanca Laurinda Bias, Minister of Mineral Resources from the Republic of Mozambique met a delegation of Ministry of Mines led by Shri S. Vijay Kumar, Secretary, to discuss cooperation between India and Mozambique in the field of Geology and Mineral Resources. The Ministry of Mines, Government of India and the Ministry of Mineral Resources of Mozambique had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to establish cooperation programme in the field of Geology and Mineral Resources, during the visit of Mozambican President to India in September, 2010. A technical expert’s team from the Ministry of Mines visited Mozambique to discuss the operational details for further cooperation with Mozambique during February 2011. In today’s meeting the focus was on the findings of the technical expert’s team and how to carry it forward. The technical team observed that there is a need to carry out systematic geological mapping, geochemical mapping and detailed exploration leading to scientific mining in selected areas in Mozambique. There is also need for skill-level improvements training for the field sampling and laboratory studies. The meeting also stressed the need for setting up a Joint Working Group in the field of Geology and Mineral Resources, which will identify, discuss, finalise, implement and monitor cooperation programme between the two countries in the mining sector.
