Noting that China-US relations are at a critical juncture, Chinese Defense Minister General Wei Feng said that insistence on seeing China as a threat and an enemy would prove to be a historical and strategic mistake. Addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue, the Defense Minister of China said that China believes that the China-US relationship serves the interests of not only these two countries but the rest of the world.
He said cooperation between China and the United States is extremely important for global peace and development. General Wei Feng said that neither our two countries nor the other countries would benefit from the confrontation. China opposes using the spirit of competition to define bilateral relations. He said that insistence on seeing China as a threat and an enemy would be a historical and strategic mistake.
General Wei Feng asked the American side not to interfere in China’s internal affairs and also stop harming China’s interests. He said that until the US side does not do this, bilateral relations between the two countries cannot improve. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday accused China of creating instability with its claim to the self-governing island of Taiwan and its destabilizing military activities in the region.
Significantly, in 1949, Taiwan and China were separated during the civil war. However, China considers the self-governing island a part of it and wants to reunite it with the mainland by force. China continues to oppose the sale of arms to Taiwan by the US.
