Recognizing the need for stability and peace in the region, these countries have closely monitored the developments within Pakistan’s political sphere and have taken certain steps to address the concerns arising from the situation.
China, being a significant ally of Pakistan, has expressed its advice to the Pakistani government to improve internal stability. The Chinese government understands the importance of a harmonious political climate in Pakistan, considering the bilateral ties and collaborative projects between the two nations, such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The stability of Pakistan is crucial for the successful implementation of these ventures, which aim to boost economic growth and enhance connectivity between the two countries.
Moreover, the President of the UAE, recognizing the gravity of the situation, personally reached out to General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff in Pakistan, offering mediation to help resolve the political crisis. The UAE’s concern stems from its commitment to regional stability and its desire to support Pakistan in achieving a peaceful and prosperous future. However, General Munir declined the offer, indicating that Pakistan would address the situation internally.
In an attempt to contribute to the resolution of the political impasse, Saudi Arabia has taken a proactive approach. Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, dispatched his special envoy, Dr. Naseer bin Abdul Aziz Al Dawood, the Deputy Interior Minister, to Pakistan. While the Pakistani government asserts that the envoy’s visit revolves around discussions on the Road to Mecca project, which aims to facilitate the Haj pilgrimage, experts believe that it is also intended to address the ongoing dispute between Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Pakistani military.
Saudi Arabia’s significant financial contributions to Pakistan, including substantial loans, have fostered a close relationship between the two countries. With Saudi Arabia’s considerable influence and interest in regional stability, it is invested in resolving the tensions within Pakistan. PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) workers not only vandalized the Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi but also set fire to the residence of the Army Corps Commander in Lahore, known as Jinnah House. These acts of aggression against the military have compelled the Pakistani Army Chief to take decisive action against Imran Khan and the PTI workers. The Army Act and Official Secrets Act are being invoked, both of which are considered stringent laws carrying severe penalties, ranging from life imprisonment to the death sentence.
