Chandigarh Carnival Start With Great Zeal

The Chandigarh Carnival 2010 got off to a colourful and enthusiastic start today at the Leisure Valley, Sector 10, Chandigarh. The event was inaugurated by Sh Pradip Mehra, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh Administration.

The chief guest was given a general salute by the girls of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35-D, Chandigarh. He then declared the carnival open.

While inaugurating the event, Sh Mehra said that this carnival had brought international acclaim to the city and that it was a matter of immense pride for the entire population of Chandigarh. He further said that it was the endeavor of the Chandigarh Administration to ensure that these three days of Chandigarh Carnival are filled with fun and frolic. “There is something for everyone here. This year’s theme- Science Fiction- will definitely hold the interest of all age groups, especially the children, I think. I would like to extend an invite to the entire public of Chandigarh and I hope that everyone will have a good time here,” said Sh Mehra.

The Leisure Valley, Sector 10, Chandigarh, holds a variety of attractions for these three days. There will be performances by the artists of NZCC on all the days. The children can enjoy art and activities like tattoo making, face painting and camel ride besides other rides that have been arranged at the venue.

Viney Vadhera, renowned artist, who excels in the art of making masks has put many colourful and interesting masks made of wood and papier maiche on display at the venue. Many vintage and classic cars have been put on display at the Government Art Museum and Art Gallery, by the Vintage and Classic Car Club, Chandigarh.

About 50 varieties of gifts and mementos have been put on display by the Le Corbusier Centre at their stall. A Film City has been put up by the ITFT, a stall displaying traffic rules, road signs, speed limits etc put up by the Traffic Police, Chandigarh; MCM College and Home Science College also have put up interesting stalls. Stalls have also been put up Lalit Kala Akademi and Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi which have organized an on-the-spot photography contest and quiz competition respectively.

A tasty treat awaits visitors at the ‘CITCO Da Vehra’ where one can taste the authentic delights from the region. Haryana Tourism has also put up a stall here.

A plethora of activities in the form of quizzes, contests and competitions will also be a major part of the three-day event. The famous carnival parade saw interesting floats on the theme of the carnival from the Home Science College, Government College of Arts, Department of IT, Chandigarh Administration etc.

Sh Mehra took a round of the venue and showed keen interest in the stalls and appreciated the effort put in by the creators. He was accompanied by Home Secretary, Ram NIwas, Deputy Commissioner, Brijendra Singh, IG Police Pradeep K Shrivastava, Director, Tourism, Amandeep Kaur, Director, Public Relations, Yogesh Kumar, among others.
