Bansal calls for a Participatory approach to Review National Water Policy

Pawan Kumar Bansal , the Union Minister of Water Resources has said that the Government believes in the participatory approach and would engage all stake holders in review of the National Water Policy. He was addressing the inaugural session of the two-day “Consultation meeting with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) on Review of National Water Policy” organized by the Ministry of Water Resources , here today.

Stressing upon the need to adopt a comprehensive approach for planning the development and management of water resources, Shri Bansal said that this can be achieved only when all sections of the society join hands. “It is in this direction that we have planned a series of consultation meetings as part of the review process. Consultation with the Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources, Consultative Committee for Ministry of Water Resources and Parliamentary Forum on Water Conservation and Management have been held and valuable suggestions received. We have also held very useful consultations with academia, experts and professionals”, the Minister informed. He said that the NGOs have played a stellar role in India’s development process and hoped the two-day consultation will help in identifying appropriate means to address the water needs of the nation in a sustainable and equitable manner. “We also plan to have deliberations with panchayati raj institutions”, the Minister informed.

Shri Vincent H. Pala, the Minister of State for Water Resources and Dr. Mihir Shah, Member (Water Resources & Rural Development), Planning Commission also spoke on the occasion. Shri P. Mohan Kumar, Addl Secretary, M/o Water Resources and Water experts, representatives of NGOs and senior officers of the ministry were present in the meeting.
