Ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is set to launch its campaign in the state with party’s national president Asaduddin Owaisi holding rallies in Allahabad and Agra this month.

Party’s state convenor Shaukat Ali said that Owaisi will hold rallies in Allahabad on March 15 and in Agra on March 29. “We have scheduled a few rallies with our national president in March but these have been pruned down to two after discussions. We have received permission for these two rallies,” Ali said.

He added that initially, more rallies were planned in March but the dates were overlapping with other programmes, such as the AIMPLB meeting from March 20 to 22. “We had planned a rally in Moradabad on March 22,” Ali said.
Another rally scheduled for Bareilly on March 12 has also been scrapped.

In the past, Owaisi had tried to hold programmes in the state but has been denied permission on a few occasions. Last year, he was denied permission to hold a rally in Azamgarh on February 1. Subsequently, permission for two other party programmes in Azamgarh was denied, one on April 25 and another on June 12, where he was to participate.
However, on the February 13 this year, AIMIM held its maiden rally in Uttar Pradesh — without Owaisi — in Maharajganj district. It was led by party’s Hyderabad MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri. Former Hyderabad mayor Majid Hussain and party leader Syed Khizar Pasha were also present in the rally where Quadri had said that had the party been in power in UP, Muzaffarnagar riots would not have taken place and even Babri Masjid would not have been demolished.

“We are expecting thousands to attend the upcoming rallies, going by our members,” Ali said. “The number of party’s members in the state has reached 1.75 lakh. In each of the 52 districts, we have a five-member committee, which includes a convenor, general secretary, treasurer, joint secretary and secretary. In the next six months, our aim is to enroll six lakh members and hold 100 big and small rallies.”
