President CII and Vice Chairman Tata Steel Mr. B. Muthuraman stressed the need for the young managers to be mindful of the larger needs of the society especially in a country like India.
While delivering convention address at IIM Rohtak he also emphasized that the managers should be leaders and change agents of the society.
Mr Ravi Kant, Vice-Chairman, Tata Motors, and Chairman, IIM Rohtak Board of Governors and Society, has said that the centre of gravity of growth and investors’ interests are shifting towards emerging countries like India which gives IIM graduates great opportunity to make a remarkable difference in successfully steering their respective organizations to becoming world class leaders.
Addressing the first convocation of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Rohtak, at the Tagore Auditorium on the Maharishi Dayanand University campus in Rohtak today, he said that the students who were passing out could either view and grab it as an opportunity, or take a defensive posture by viewing it as a threat. “But, I am confident that the strong focus of the institute in developing our students on agility and adaption will help them in shaping a situation to their advantage,” he said adding that appetite for continuous learning and intellectual growth held the key to professional success.
Mr Kant said that the world economy was in a state of flux. Not only global companies are eyeing Indian market, Indian companies are also acquiring or starting operations abroad. There is dearth of managers in India who are capable and have the right mindset of dealing with the new systems. “In the past two years, the institute has given special attention in developing you to perform better in such a changing situation”, Mr Kant said.
The mood at Rohtak IIM was festive with the first batch having achieved hundred per cent final placement, at a remarkable average salary of Rs 1.22 million. The institute has achieved this feat well before the convocation, and even before most of the other IIMs, could do so. The institute is the only IIM located strategically in the National Capital Region and is the eighth IIM to be established in the country.
IIM Rohtak is the fifth IIM to get membership of the AACSB, the most coveted international accreditation agency, and the first one to strike an international partnership with a leading US institution, Kelley School of Business of Indiana University, which is globally ranked in first 25 in research. IIM Rohtak is also listed with GMAC, which conducts GMAT, to facilitate student applications from the candidates based abroad.
Describing the first convocation as an important milestone for IIM, Rohtak with the first batch of students graduating and embarking on an exciting journey of their professional careers, Mr Kant thanked them and their parents for taking the leap of faith in joining an infant institution working out of borrowed facilities and faculty.
“You may have come from the far corners of the country with great expectations, but, instead, were placed in less than an ideal environment. I thank you for bearing with this situation. This would have enabled you to have a live experience of management situations, when, in a given circumstance, you are required to deliver the best results. I am sure that you are going out more confident, more open minded and happy and would have built many enduring relationships”, he added.
Speaking about the progress made by Rohtak IIM, he said, “We now have a full-time Director in Prof. Rameshan, who has previous experience in other IIMs. We have a great faculty chosen with utmost care to participate in laying the foundation. We have created an International Advisory Council consisting of eminent persons from academia and business from India and abroad to give suggestions and views in creating an institution of excellence.”
IIM Rohtak will focus on nurturing transformational leaders capable of navigating the ambiguity and complexity of the emerging markets and the new interconnected world. “Our intent is to be seen as an institute known for engaging in authentic contemporary research on societal, organizational and individuals’ challenges and choices”, Mr Kant added.
The 47 students of the PGDM Batch 2010-12 were conferred diplomas by the Chairman BOG, Mr. Ravi Kant. Two Gold Medals were also awarded. The one for the best scholastic performance went to Shivank Sharma and the one for the best all round performance went to Ankush Jain.
The Convocation process took place in a festive mood after the first passing-out batch achieved 100 per cent Final Placement, with a remarkable average salary of Rs.12.22 lakhs, well before the Convocation and even before most of the other IIMs, including the older ones, could complete their final placement.
