6 years ago i.e. on November 8, Rs 15.52 lakh crores of 500 and 1000 rupees were taken out of the economy. Then there was the entry of new 500 rupees and 2000 rupees big notes. Of these, 500 notes are in the market, but 2000 notes have disappeared. 2000 notes were the most in circulation in the country during the year 2017-18. Then there were 33,630 lakh notes of 2000 in the market, whose number decreased year after year. According to the data, their number has come down by 9,120 lakh i.e. 27%. In this way, 2000 notes of Rs 1.82 lakh have gone out of circulation from the market. The question arises that where did these notes go?

After demonetisation, the 2000 notes issued in large numbers are no longer in circulation. You must have also noticed that 2000 notes are not being used as much in transactions now, nor are they getting in the same number during ATM withdrawals. In such a situation, the question arises that where did the 2000 notes ‘disappear’ after all?

Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur had informed in the Lok Sabha that for the last two years, not a single note of Rs 2000 has been printed, in fact the government takes a decision regarding the printing of notes after talks with the RBI. The central bank has not printed a single 2000 note since April 2019. This is also mentioned in its annual report. So where did these notes go?

Economic affairs experts are raising a strong possibility that these notes may have been deposited as black money due to the high value of these notes. Even at the time of demonetisation, black money was estimated to be around Rs 4-5 lakh crore, which experts believed would not return to the system.
